Reality: Losing Nature

Subject: Poem, Reality, Environment

About a year ago I went to Disney in Orlando, Florida with my family. What struck me as sad to some extent was how everything when viewed up close was made of plastic or some pre-fabricated material. I started thinking about how we are quick to cut down trees, clear out land and replace nature with plastic monstrosities or prefabricated buildings.

Now, I'm not a gung-ho environmentalist; but I do love nature. I understand that our population is growing and we are continuing to consume more of our natural resources. What's the answer? I don't know. Our struggle in modern society is to find that balance between nature and us. I just hope we discover, and take seriously, that need for balance before we go to far.

Escaping Reality: Losing Nature

A friend one said, "All is fake",
All around is what man makes

Reality is but just an illusion,
Fanciful views are just for confusion,

Distance between real and made,
Grows each day as nature does fade

Built, construct, remodel, design,
Nature subsumed no longer mine

All seems wooden and concrete,
Nature succumbed to man’s defeat

Machines are the tool of demise,
Nature we love, and yet despise

Man wakes up one day to find,
No more green, none of its kind

He searches the world for a patch of land,
But all that is left won’t fit in his hand

Tears well up and drip down his cheek,
Modernity he sought now he’s up the creek

Why have we done this to ourselves,
Human life now stacked like books on shelves

To err is human, to forgive divine,
But no regrets begets life’s shine

Now our reality is all it seems,
Concrete crumbs, and rusty beams

Gone is color of nature’s palette,
Blurred to grey, and brushed with a mallet

Will she return no one knows,
But room must be made if she is to grow

Away with the made, away with the plastic,
Time will bring forth, nature’s elastic

When she arrives, this time she will find,
People less eager to step on her kind

Until then, we must surely endure,
The loss of beauty all too pure.
