Oliver Wendell Holmes offers this piece of educational wisdom: “Man’s mind, once
stretched by new ideas, never regains it original dimension.” When we allow
ourselves to be exposed to new experiences or learn new things through reading,
we are stretching if not transforming our way of thinking. Each hint of new
knowledge contributes to the reformation of our way of thinking.
When Guttenberg developed the printing press he had no idea that it would be the
catalyst that would start the Age of Enlightenment and the Age of Reason. The
printing press made information available to the masses, not just the rich or
the aristocracy. Information was to become democratized.
During those times to own a book was a great sign of wealth and stature.
Education was prized because it was scarce or too costly to acquire.
Fast forward to this new age of technology and information and we have the exact
opposite problem. We have so much information that we tend not to value it as we
once did. Our greatest challenge is sorting through the information dust storm
to try to get to useful information. Times have certainly changed.
But what hasn’t changed over the age is what information does for us as
individuals. No matter what the subject, we have at our disposal a plethora of
information. And the more we learn and are exposed to deeper or varied
information on the subject the more our way of thinking is transformed. When I
speak of transforming I speak of it in the positive sense. Our ability to grasp
new knowledge, integrate it and apply it to our everyday circumstance for
personal growth and improvement.
We are responsible, solely responsible, for our own growth. As children we
didn’t know any better. As adults we cannot afford to abdicate our
responsibilities to continued learning and self-development.
Self-development is about always searching or being aware of new things to
learn. The process of learning only becomes arduous when we fail to enjoy the
process and results.
In college I resented being given reading material. I was always reading what my
professors wanted me to read. I resented that to a large extent. After
graduation I began to choose the material I was interested in and I rediscovered
the joy of learning. I also allowed myself to wander in the great fields of
different disciplines. I studied philosophy, religion, sociology, economics,
read some fiction, history and so on.
The greatest pleasure in learning is first, being able to choose whatever your
range-of-the-moment interest were. The second is discovering after the fact how
much you’ve learned and how it has given you a greater breadth of understanding.
And in the end, most would not disagree, that the more you know the more you
realize you don’t know. As our mind expands so does our appreciation for the
complexities of nature and society. We must learn to the see the complexities of
simplicity (i.e., no issues are ever easy to solve without ostracizing someone)
and the simplicity in the complex (i.e., if we have clear values, decisions are
easier to arrive at).
Mr. Holmes was right, once the mind is stretched, it will never go back to what
it once was. But I also believe the opposite to be true. If we don’t feed our
minds and force it to expand, our thinking process becomes limited and in terms
of understanding I fear our thinking stagnates and contracts.
