Monopoly on Ideas

The other day I was walking through our local mall here in Atlanta and found a bookstore with a great selection. I stepped inside, wandered around and eventually bought a book by Dan Kennedy called, NO B.S. for Business Success. (Author's Note: Go to www.dankennedy.com. The only thing I can say about this book is WOW! Dan understands the mind of an entrepreneur and what s/he goes through to build a business.)
On the way out of the bookstore I saw that famous of famous games, Monopoly. What caught my attention was not the game itself, but the ‘variations’ of Monopoly that were now available.
There was the “dog oriented” Monopoly game for dog lovers. There was the “Disney” version of the Monopoly game with Mickey and the folks. There were many other variety of Monopoly games. On closer analysis I could tell by the game board covers that the objectives were still the same; only the 'twist' had changed.
I walked out of the store thinking, “Wow, that’s creative.” Here’s a game that has been around for decades, and yet it still survives. But more amazing was the vision to see beyond the basic board game to create these new “variations”of Monopoly.
Here are some examples of what I'm talking about:
Now here’s a game like Monopoly, which in its hey-day was probably one of the most popular games around. Yes, the game has had longevity. But apparently the owners aren't sitting on their backsides since they've created variations of Monopoly to satisfy distinct markets (i.e., dog lovers, Disney lovers, etc.).
What’s my point?
Many people argue that there are no original ideas these days. Bull! Monopoly proves my point. Success in life and in business is about finding a new angle, a slant if you will, on doing business. It’s about creating a market space that doesn’t exist.
Allow yourself to think without limit and allow yourself the pleasure of trying something new. The typical entrepreneurs figure out what people want and then deliver. The innovative entrepreneurs find existing markets, create a new twist and proceed to exploit them (in a good way) to create new market opportunities.
There are no “monopolies” on new ideas or way of thinking. Be creative. Allow your mind to stretch beyond the obvious. What new angle can you give your business or idea that will make it different?
